When Minority Programs Lack Diversity

A month ago, I prepared for a summer of diversity.

I was heading to Houston for a competitive Pre-Health Program that was aimed at minority students. I packed my bags and prepared to live for the next six weeks with blacks, asians, and hispanics exclusively.

This Hispanic girl has now been in the program for six weeks.

After six weeks, do I now feel “diversified”? Do I no longer feel like a “minority” in a white man’s world?

Alas, this transformation has yet to kick in.

The truth is, I have never felt my minority status so keenly as when I participated in a Minority Diversity Program. It felt me a minority among minorities.

My Bioethics professor taught me how a room full of minorities can lack diversity.

On the first day of his class, he loudly and proudly proclaimed, by way of parentheses, that “We can all agree that America is a racist country.”

Over my surprise, I heard titters of reassuring laughter from my minority classmates.

But he was not done.

“And we can all agree that America is a sexist country.”

The agreement increased as every male tried to escape from being called “chauvinistic”.

The Professor smiled and continued on with his lecture, leaving me angry and shocked.

No, I am not naive. Despite being a Conservative, I subscribe to the New York Times and have taken classes at Public Colleges. It does not shock me that a liberal expresses his viewpoint. But what will always shock me is when any human with rational capacity shuts down and does not permit discussion.

Any idea worth having is an idea worth debating.

I was angry with him but mostly I was angry with myself. He did not allow
