Journalism Rising to a New Level

With all the technology we have today, journalism has advanced has really come a long way since printed news. One factor that has really had a huge effect on journalism today is social media. There is no doubt that social media has sped up the process in which we all receive information and news online. And when it comes to journalism, social media has allowed journalists to spread their news faster, and make it more personal to their readers.

This video discusses the pros and cons of how social media is changing journalism. One obvious pro is how fast we can spread news nowadays, however, we don’t have what some would call a “broadcast publishing model” anymore which takes away that direct connection.

One problem that has surfaced from the amount of influence that social media has on news today is that many stories have lost their authenticity. And I believe that this is something that we need to work on when it comes to publishing news.

This photo from Flickr creates a nostalgic feeling of what journalism was like in the old days and how much hard work was put into the dedicated process of spreading news.

This article discusses some interesting points about the struggles that journalists face with all the new media technologies that we have today.

Ultimately, there is no denying the significant effect that social media has had on journalism and the act of spreading news. There are good and bad things to this big change. Journalists can spread news faster and involve more voices in the content that they publish, but they do lose some of the direct connection that used to bring them closer to their audience. Going forward, journalists need to learn how to embrace these new media tools so that they can still report on the news that interests them and their viewers in the most authentic way possible.
