How Far Is Too Far?

What’s the distance between your current location and your moral line in the sand?

We have all seen those memes with outrageous questions like “would you slap your mother for two-million dollars cash?”

We would all love to think that we are better than that — than them — but don’t we all have a threshold — a line, a personal point-of-no-return? Where is yours and how will you know when you’ve crossed it?

About a month ago, I sat down and watched a documentary on Netflix entitled The Great Hack. It centered around the role of a company called Cambridge Analytica in the 2016 US and UK elections. Many of us in the Western world had heard or saw snippets of this drama play out in the news. However, I wasn’t paying close attention and this documentary opened my eyes to new players and events. I was particularly captivated by the story of Brittany Kaiser.

Kaiser, a former Obama campaign worker and subsequent United Nations staffer — an all-around do-gooder — seems to be cast in a diametrically opposed role to her former self. I wondered aloud how that happened.

At first, I couldn’t pinpoint what it was about this character that rubbed me the wrong way. She was an intelligent woman who’d managed to climb the ranks in a company and political landscape that even through my television screen seemed to be difficult for any woman, even a well-educated white middle-class woman.
