Hourglass

A Poem

Watch the sand gently diminish
as it goes from top to bottom
and our time evaporates
along with the raindrops
that count in unison
with each grain, each second

I am the hourglass,
gently timing everything
so I know it has an end
because I don’t want it
to just go on forever
because then I will
take it for granted
and the sand inside
will be meaningless

You are the hourglass
holding my time in you
and letting me get older
as you fill bottom
and I fill another year
with more gray hair
and a little less pep

But sometimes I just watch
and get a simple pleasure
out of the sand slowly
dropping, so gently
that the more I focus on it,
the more it becomes one,
and then it is more than time,
just dust in the universe
and my life in an hourglass
