Recipe Roulette Site

My name is Trevor Coons and I am a student at the UC Berkeley 12 week Full Stack Coding Bootcamp. For project 1 I worked in a group of 4 to create a site that helps answer the age old question — what should I have to eat? The site uses two third party APIs from GitHub APIs to fetch data for food recipes and a beverage pairing respectively. We used purecss.io as an alternative to BootStrap and relied on Excalidraw.com to brainstorm ideas and wireframe the site. The site returns recipes for food and beverage based upon user input. Our site is split between two columns. First is the meal type form and second is the drink form. Entering a food into the meal form returns 6 results of that food type with a picture and a link to the recipe. Clicking on “Get Drink!” randomly selects a beer pairing.

When looking to create an application that has a marketable feature set there is a need to establish what is a Minimum Viable Product (MVP) that will bring your ideas to market. Our long term vision for this idea includes allowing users to rate their food and beverage roulette pics, including map functionality on where to buy ingredients. Multiple revenue streams would be possible when building out a more fully featured comprehensive browser — store — table application. While there are roulette apps for food and stand alone apps for drinks, there are no apps that we could find that combined the two components to create a comprehensive dining experience.

For our design process we started out in an idea roundtable using Excalidraw.com to brainstorm. We then refined our ideas to narrow down specifics and did reality checks of what would work given our skills and time constraints. We adopted the agile methodology for software development starting with our user story to state a challenge, prototype through wireframing, define what it is important through our kanban board, testing through trial and error, and iterating different versions through GitHub branches.

For future iterations of the Recipe Roulette site, we would like to feature “includes” and “excludes” forms to cater to folks with dietary restrictions and preferences. Our “get drink” API is limited to one brewery so we would like to expand the APIs we use to access more drink types such as sodas, teas and wine.
