simple pleasures

I revel in the little things.

Coffee, sunsets, the smell of a new book.

The way the sun shines through my windows in the morning, casting a streak of light onto my kitchen counter and floors. My two cats. A fresh manicure. When the dragon lily on my desk at work sprouts a new leaf.

The way my makeup looks just after I’ve spritzed my face with setting spray. My boyfriend’s laugh. Trying a new recipe for dinner — even if it doesn’t come out the way I’d hoped. The Uber ride to the airport.

The thunderous horn of the train just outside my apartment as it passes through my town into the next. The way the crisp air stings my face in autumn. My stomach cramps after a night of sushi, movies, and endless laughs with my best friends.

When the outfit I planned in my head looks even better than I had imagined. Lighting the musk-scented candle on my coffee table after cleaning the living room. The month of October. I love you’s right before bed, and as soon as we open our eyes in the morning.

I’m human, and therefore I complain. That, I will never stop. I’ve also experienced and been dealt some shitty shit. That said, I choose to revel in life’s little things. To, as cliché as it may sound, find joy in the smallest of treasures. To revisit that simple happiness we felt as children, the happiness we beamed with each morning we’d wake and the same happiness that trailed behind our eyelids as we were tucked into bed at night.

I want to be happy. And if happiness is what I feel whether I’m sipping my morning coffee or watering a plant or saying I love you…then so be it.
