The JavaScript 2022 stack

This year I decided to write my thoughts on the tech stack of choice. I will choose a technology stack for a project that needs to retain an ability to scale with ease for the next couple of years. Just in case that new project of yours gets to be the next big thing out there 😉.
I will view talk about both front-end and back-end while giving you my thoughts on the tools I think are must-haves under your developer tool belt.

Front-end is growing by the day, and new tools and technologies keep emerging every year. Choosing a tech stack for your front-end in 2022 is by far the most controversial but also my favorite topic, so let’s get into it.

I believe that when it comes to data fetching, there is a matter of preference, but my very subjective perspective on this is:

I was not an early adopter for Typescript, but shortly after trying it out, I got converted. Because I was working in the React ecosystem, I normally assumed that Flow would be the best choice for statically typed extensions to JavaScript. Well, I was wrong. While writing things in Flow, I often dealt with problems already solved by TypeScript and thus felt like re-inventing the wheel at times. Nevertheless, I choose Typescript for the foreseeable future. It will raise the integrity of your code and keep your output readable. The development around this tool has been outstanding. Over these last couple of years, they have been on top of the latest and greatest features and introduced new functionality driven by the community.

The back-end stack needs some methodic and careful choices as it heavily relies on your business operating domain. Things are not very straightforward, and you might disagree with the choices below.

While this has been a very subjective view of the current landscape and usage of technologies, I hope it provides some help for starting your next project that might grow into a side business.

At the end of the day, it all boils down to choosing the technology that makes sense for you and not falling for the hype-driven development that we get exposed to day in and day out. Knowing what technologies to choose is a great advantage, but keep in mind that we all make mistakes, and as technology advances, we are getting more performant and much cheaper alternatives to what we have today.

What is your preferred tech stack?
