Job Seekers Should Learn From Resume Bloopers

Many job seekers hate the detail oriented, technical task of creating a good resume. That is unfortunate, because the resume is usually the first impression that job seekers make. Furthermore, if those first impressions are not good ones, there will be no interviews, and no chances to be hired.

One fun way for job applicants to learn about the requirements for good resumes is to read resume blunders. Fortunately, there are many web sites that showcase resume bloopers. This article is too short to have any more than a small sample of bloopers at these web sites. Some of these resume blunders are included in this article, however, and explanations will show what readers can learn from these blunders.

It is obvious that this job seeker should have used professional language instead of slang.

Another resume blunder listed at this web site had to do with a job applicant who photographically ghosted her headshot as the background to her resume. Such an attempt to be creative is risky even when applying for a position requiring exceptional creativity.

In yet another resume blunder, a job applicant’s resume read, “My duties included cleaning the restrooms and seating the customers.” Such a lack of clarity made this resume memorable, but not in a way that was helpful to the job seeker.

In the next resume blunder, the resume reads, “Experience: “Chapter president, 1887–1992.” This typo seems to indicate that this job applicant is the world’s oldest person.

The next job applicant wrote on his resume, “Qualifications: “I have guts, drive, ambition and heart, which is probably more than a lot of the drones that you have working for you.” Such an attitude is not a reassuring indication of how well this job applicant would get along with the existing employees.

This web site is only one of many such web sites that list resume bloopers of job applicants. Other such web sites include:

These web sites showcase resumes, for example, in which different resumes listed:

1. “Pig Wrestling Champion” as a qualification.

2. A job candidate’s email address with “shakinmybootie” as part of it.

3. A job candidate’s email signature, and, as part of it, “I am the master, and technology is my slave.”

Make the effort to create a resume that makes you stand out in a positive way. As Colin Powell said, “There are no secrets to success. It is the result of preparation, hard work, and learning from failure.”
