Using the Portland MAX and Bus Systems

After nearly 3 months in Portland, here’s what I know about the PDX public transit system…

The Portland public transport system also known as “The TriMet” covers approximately 533 miles and as the name implies, covers 3 metropolitan areas: Multnomah, Washington, and Clackamas.

Because I stayed in Beaverton (southwest of Portland), I only used a small section of the TriMet system.

Nevertheless, the data in this article will help anyone get around TriMet.

88 Bus > Blue/Red MAX

62 Bus > Blue MAX

The Red MAX line runs from Beaverton Transit Center to the airport. The Blue MAX line runs from Hillsboro to Gresham and the two have nearly identical routes through most of Portland.

That means, if you live along one of the routes, you can often take either train.

The transit app is awesome. My wife and I recently became New Yorkers and she was the one who shared this app with me. However, I was surprised to learn from a Portlander that it could be used here too.

It does the following well:

The hop card is wonderfully convenient. The advantages of a hop card are as follows:

I frequently used the hop card app to add more credits to my card and to check my existing balance.

If you don’t feel like investing $3 for this convenience, you can use the TriMet app and buy digital tickets there.

Or, you can buy paper tickets like a heathen.

I hope this article provided some simple insight into the Portland Metro. Here are some maps you may find useful:
